When was the status of the Most Favored Nation (MFN) status?
India became a member of the World Trade Organization (WTO) on 01 January 1995. After a year of becoming WTO, India granted Pakistan the Most Favored Nation (MFN) status in 1996, but India did not give such status to Pakistan.
Process of getting the Most Favored Nation (MFN) status:
Under the Article 21B of the World Trade Organization, no country can withdraw the status of the Most Favored Nation from any country when there is a dispute over security issues between the two countries. However, all the conditions have to be fulfilled for this.
What is the Most Favored Nation (MFN)?
Actually MFN (MFN) means the Most Favored Nation, the most preferential country. Based on the World Trade Organization and International Trade rules, the status of the most preferred country (MFN) is given. Once the status of MFN is attained, the status earned by the country assures that it will not be harmed in the business.
What is the benefit of MFN status?
MFN status is given in the business. Under this, there is a special discount in the import-export. This status earned is on the lowest import duty. Members of the WTO are bound by open trade and market but under MFN rules, special discount is granted to the countries. In addition to cement, sugar, organic chemicals, cotton, vegetables and certain fruits, commodities like mineral oil, dry fruits, steel and commodities are traded between the two countries. According to the figures of 2012 between India and Pakistan, there is a trade of about $ 2.60 billion.
Will India lose its status from Pakistan?
If India does eliminate the status of the Most Favored Nation (MFN), then Pakistan may stop trade with India on its own. India may have a deficit in this, but in the wake of terrorism and the security of the country, India has agreed to do so even at the expense of deficit.
